Shanghai ranking: University of Bonn among Germany's Top 7

The University of Bonn is one of the seven best universities in Germany and in the top 150 in the world, according to the result of this year's worldwide university ranking from the Chinese Jiaotong University in Shanghai. In the subjects economics and mathematics, Bonn ranks 35th and 36th in international comparison.

The Shanghai Ranking, which has been published since 2003, evaluates universities on the basis of various indicators, the main focus being on research. Among other factors, scientific publications and citations, Nobel Prizes and the Fields Medal in Mathematics are considered.

In the current ranking, Bonn is in the placement group 101-150. Only seven German universities were able to make it into the top 150 and Bonn is the only North Rhine-Westphalian university to be represented. In comparison to Germany, the University of Bonn shares fifth to seventh place with the University of Frankfurt and University of Freiburg.

Economics and mathematics at the forefront

In the newly published Shanghai ranking by subjects, Bonn's specialist areas rank in the top spots. The University of Bonn’s economics rank 35th worldwide and are thereby the leading German university in this field. Also leading in the German field is Bonn’s Department of Mathematics, ranked 32nd worldwide. Both subjects are the only German representatives among the top 50.

Bonn’s agricultural sciences, physics and human biology make it into the cohort 51-75, life sciences are in cohort 76-100 and thus among Germany’s top 10. Geography, computer science, pharmacy and dentistry in the group 101-150 and chemistry, earth sciences and clinical medicine in the group 151-200.

The Rector of the University of Bonn, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Hoch, is pleased with the excellent rating from Shanghai, which follows a long-term trend: "In the 200th year of its existence as an internationally connected research university, the University of Bonn is one of the most competitive universities in Germany and worldwide. I am extremely pleased that the outstanding achievements of our scientists once again find worldwide recognition and lead to this great result."
