Student Accommodation Wanted New platform for private rooms/Joint appeal by the AStA, Studierendenwerk and University

New platform for private rooms/Joint appeal by the AStA, Studierendenwerk and University

Finding somewhere to live at the start of the semester remains a major challenge for many students in Bonn. Even though the winter semester has already been under way a few weeks, many young people are still hunting for an affordable room. This is especially true of international students, who often arrive just before the semester starts and have hardly any time to mount a detailed search. The University of Bonn, the Studierendenwerk Bonn and the General Students’ Committee (AStA) are therefore issuing an urgent joint appeal to all private landlords and landladies in the city, asking them to offer up their available accommodation to students. A new online housing platform has also been launched for this purpose.

New Studierendenwerk platform for private rooms

The Studierendenwerk Bonn’s platform for private rooms can be found at https://www.studierendenwerk-bonn.de/en/accommodation/private-room-rental and allows rooms or whole apartments to be advertised easily for free. The platform makes available accommodation easier to find and allows it to be matched directly with students in urgent need of somewhere to live.

“Renting for Help”

The AStA is also continuing to provide support with its tried-and-tested brokerage service for private rooms, where offers of accommodation can be made in person, over the phone or via email. Something else that the AStA does is raise awareness of the “Renting for Help” project, which matches students with elderly people offering a place to live in exchange for support in their day-to-day lives. The model fosters a sense of mutual security and relieves the burden on both sides and has already produced many good experiences in Bonn.

Many landlords and landladies from the “baby boomer” generation in particular are finding themselves with accommodation to spare, for instance if their children have flown the nest or their own circumstances have changed. Even just a single room can make it easier for students to hit the ground running in their studies. Offering a fixed-term lease for a semester or two or a temporary solution at short notice is often more helpful than one might think. The institutions involved would like to thank everyone in advance for any support they can give.
