Biochemistry

Combining the fields of chemistry, biology, physiology and biophysics, biochemistry explores the molecules of life and forms the basis for all life sciences. Biochemistry is both about the analysis of biochemical systems and the reconstruction of biological systems through synthetic biochemistry. Based on state-of-the-art biochemical research, students in the Biochemistry master’s degree program receive theoretical and practical training in the key areas of biochemistry through lecture series, methodology courses and lab rotations at the University of Bonn and at partner institutions. In addition, students acquire in-depth knowledge about the chemical biology of nucleic acids, lipids, lipidomics and metabolomics, biophysics of membrane proteins as well as the biochemical basis of neurophysiology, using state-of-the-art technologies and methods and being supervised by experienced and internationally renowned scientists. This degree program offers access to a strong research environment both at the University of Bonn (focusing on immunology and metabolic processes) and other Bonn-based research institutions.

Possible lines of work:

Biochemical foundational research (Max Planck Institutes, large research facilities, etc.), development/production/marketing (industry), molecular diagnostics (medical, biotechnological, environmental, forensic questions), clinical disciplines (pediatrics, human genetics, internal medicine, etc.), academia (teaching/research at universities, research institutions, etc.)
