Following the model of the German Goethe Institutes Confucius Institutes are currently being developed worldwide in cooperation with prestigious universities. The aim is to spread Chinese language and culture.

The new Confucius Institute was launched by the University of Bonn and the headquarter of the Confucius Institutes in Beijing together with the long-standing Bonn partner university Beijing Language and Culture University. The aim of the new institute is to strengthen cooperation in the fields of education, culture, business and science between China and Germany.

The Confucius Institute Bonn is housed in the university building at Brühlerstrasse 7 in the north of Bonn. The premises are provided by the University of Bonn. The legal institution of the institute is an association, which was founded in December 2016 by eight private individuals. In the long term, the Confucius Institute Bonn will be academically associated with the university as a scientifically associated institution (a so-called "An-Institut").
