Advisory Board as guests at the University of Bonn Advisory Board as guests at the University of Bonn

Scientific Advisory Board met to learn about progress in the excellence strategy

A lot has happened in research since the University of Bonn achieved excellence status in 2019. The Scientific Advisory Board - a body of external scientists from all over the world - has now informed itself about the progress in the Excellence Strategy. Over the past three days, the eight experts met in Bonn with representatives of the university management, the transdisciplinary research areas, the clusters of excellence and the faculties to exchange ideas and make recommendations to the rectorate. In addition, they participated in the opening of the Academic Year, where, among other things, excellence in science was discussed.

The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the University of Bonn is composed of international, renowned scientists and advises the Rectorate on important issues within the framework of the Excellence Strategy. The board is meeting in Bonn for the second time.

"I am delighted to be able to welcome the members of our SAB back to Bonn in person, after last year's meeting of the panel unfortunately had to be cancelled," says Prof. Dr. Andreas Zimmer, Vice Rector for Research and Early-Career Researchers. "We greatly appreciate the expertise of the international scientists inside the SAB and benefit from the lively and constructive exchange, which makes an important contribution to the development planning of the University of Bonn."

Discussions with the TRAs, clusters of excellence and faculties

The Transdisciplinary Research Areas (TRAs), in which researchers at the interfaces of faculties and disciplines work on central scientific, technological and societal topics of the future, form a supporting pillar of Bonn University of Excellence. The new research concept has gained momentum in the past year.

The spokespersons of the Transdisciplinary Research Areas presented the progress and further plans within their TRAs to the Scientific Advisory Board. Among others, outstanding scientists have followed the call to the University of Bonn to open up new research fields in the TRAs and to set impulses. More of these so-called Hertz and Argelander professorships will follow.

Work has also progressed in the six clusters of excellence at the University of Bonn. The clusters that received funding for the first time have established and aligned themselves, while the clusters that have been in existence for longer have expanded their structures and developed new concepts. The external advisors learned exactly what these developments look like from the spokespersons of the clusters of excellence.

In addition, the deans presented the strategic plans of their faculties. The Schlegel professorships, which are partly financed by excellence funds and are filled with internationally renowned researchers, are an important building block in this context.
The discussions of the Scientific Advisory Board with the individual research associations and faculties took place without the participation of the university management. The next meeting is planned for the coming year.
