Tibetan Studies

Tibetan Studies is concerned with the history, culture and language of the Tibetan language cultural area: present day Tibet within the People's Republic of China and other related areas such as Baltistan (Pakistan), Ladakh, Spiti, Lahul, Kinnaur, Sikkim (India), Bhutan and certain regions of Nepal.

At Bonn University, students have the opportunity to acquire a solid basic knowledge of the history of the Tibetan cultural sphere and also become equipped to translate and study textual sources to independently research Tibetan history, religion, politics, art and literature.

Students are also welcome to attend the so-called 'Tibet colloquiums' hosted regularly by the department where Tibetologists present their current research projects.

This subject must be combined with a second subject.
