Researchers at risk

The University of Bonn is actively supporting researchers at risk who can no longer work in their home countries due to persecution or violence. As a founding member of the German section of the worldwide Scholars at Risk network, the University of Bonn is explicitly committed to the principle of academic freedom.

Philipp Schwartz Initiative

The Philipp Schwartz Initiative enables universities and research institutions in Germany to host researchers at risk on the basis of a full fellowship. If you are interested in being nominated by the University of Bonn or if you would like to nominate a researcher at risk, please contact the Welcome Center for International Researchers. As a rule, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation calls for nominations from universities and research institutions twice a year.

Scholars at Risk

The University of Bonn is a sustainable member of the Scholars at Risk network and a founding member of the German section founded in 2016. With over 500 universities from 38 countries, the network is the leading mouthpiece for researchers at risk around the globe. The office of the global SAR network in New York can support the placement of researchers at risk at host institutions as well as with a risk assessment for the Philipp Schwartz initiative.

The New University in Exile

The University of Bonn is a member of the New University in Exile Consortium, which was founded by the New School for Social Research in New York. The main mission of the consortium is to nurture persecuted and uprooted scholars by creating a sense of intellectual community among the exiled scholars. Through various formats of encounter and exchange, the member universities work to reduce the uncertainty and the profound loss of identity of the scientists. It is the state of exile that the consortium seeks to alleviate through its activities.

SAR NRW support program for researchers at risk

Some of the member institutions of the Scholars at Risk (SAR) Germany Section in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) offer a joint support program for researchers at risk. It is primarily aimed at the Philipp Schwartz fellows of the participating institutions, but other interested researchers can also apply to participate. With seminars and workshops on various research and career-related topics, the program aims to facilitate professional integration and a new start in Germany.
