University of Bonn continues its climb up the QS Sustainability Rankings

The University of Bonn has performed outstandingly in the latest QS Sustainability Rankings for 2026. It has improved significantly on last year’s already impressive showing, climbing to 57th in the world and second in Germany. Compiled by analysts at Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the rankings assess the work that universities are doing to tackle the most urgent environmental and social problems facing the world.

The current rankings show the University of Bonn maintaining its upward trend of the past few years. Having broken into the world’s top 100 for the first time last year, this year has seen it leap 38 places in the global rankings, putting it 57th out of more than 2,000 universities from all over the world. Meanwhile, its performance within Germany has been even better, with the University improving by four places to now sit second.

“I’m delighted by the University of Bonn’s fantastic performance in this year’s QS Sustainability Rankings,” says Professor Annette Scheersoi, Vice Rector for Sustainability at the University of Bonn. “All our efforts to promote sustainability are paying off. This just shows how important it is to take the issue of sustainability seriously and embed it in the very structure of the University in order to bring about genuinely transformative change. The result underlines the value of our strategic approach and strengthens our resolve to keep on expanding it.”

As well as in the overall rankings, the University of Bonn also did very well in several of the eight sub-categories. For “Equality,” for instance, it came 33rd in the world and an impressive 1st in Germany, while it rose from 15th to 4th in the world in the “Health and Wellbeing” category. It also improved its standing in the overarching “Environmental Impact” category, coming in 55th in the world and 1st in Germany. 

The Ranking
This was the fourth year for the QS Sustainability Rankings, in which 2,002 institutions from 107 countries took part, including 621 European universities—65 of which were German. Applying 52 quantitative and qualitative indicators, the rankings assess the engagement of and social and environmental impact achieved by universities in their capacity both as higher-education and research institutions and as major employers.
