Could you describe your research topic to someone from another discipline in one sentence?

I study how virtual reality affects religious experiences and how Muslim communities use this technology to explore spirituality.

Why did you decide to do your doctorate in Bonn?

I chose Bonn because it is a diverse city, easy to integrate into, and has beautiful natural surroundings. The weather is also milder compared to larger cities like Berlin or Munich. Additionally, the University of Bonn has an excellent reputation, which was another important reason for my choice.

What do you especially like about the University of Bonn?

I really appreciate that the University of Bonn never leaves its students alone; they provide support at every stage of
doctoral studies. Multiple departments actively assist doctoral students:

  • Career Service: CV checks, consulting, and guidance on professional development.
  • Study Buddy Program: Networking opportunities and help integrating international students.
  • International Office: Assists with accommodation, settling in, administrative matters, and informs students where to consult for career counseling.
  • PhD Cafe gatherings: Informal spaces for peer support and collaboration.
  • AStA (General Students’ Committee): Support with financing events, housing, and student activities.
  • ProMotion: Scholarships, peer mentoring, PhD Cafe events, and German courses.
  • Free German language courses and other resources to improve language skills.
  • Study Skills Workshops: Guidance on thesis writing, research methodology, and time management.
  • Studierendenwerk Bonn: Housing, financial support, and student welfare.
  • University Counseling Services: Support for mental health and stress management.
  • Library Services and IT Support: Access to research databases and technical assistance.

Overall, the University of Bonn provides a comprehensive support system, ensuring doctoral students are guided academically, professionally, and personally throughout their studies.

Do you have a tip on how to overcome the lack of motivation during difficult phases of the dissertation?

I take short breaks, visit natural surroundings in and around Bonn, enjoy good food, and listen to pleasant music or sounds. These activities help me relax and regain focus.

What advice would you give new doctoral researchers at the University of Bonn?

Be consistent, be patient, and enjoy the journey.

Which support service offered by the University of Bonn have you benefited from the most?

I have benefited most from the International Office. They helped me find accommodation, invited me to PhD Cafe meetups, informed me about useful workshops, and guided me on where to consult for career counseling and professional development.

Leah Petersen, doctoral student featured in our November issue, asked: Do you already know what to do after completing your doctorate?

Yes, I want to work as a lecturer while also running a side business! I would also love to open a restaurant in the future.

Thank you for the interview. We wish you all the best and every success for the future!
