Teaching Disciplinary Histories

Over the last decades, the teaching of disciplinary histories and theories has attracted critiques from different directions. Some scholars and university managers have asked whether we should teach disciplinary history at all. Reasons for this rejection include the perpetuation of colonial structures, distortion of science, lack of student interest, lack of ‘real world applicability’ and desire to overcome disciplinary barriers. Despite these objections, disciplinary histories have emerged as an unlikely source of subversion during a time of far-right resurgence. Not only do they allow for alternative explorations of history and objections to the status quo, but also for creating incisive parallels with the present. In this workshop, we discuss the possibilities and limits of disciplinary histories across disciplines (sciences, social sciences, arts & humanities). How can different disciplines support, and learn from, one another?
