Statistics with R - an Introduction

A BIGS workshop offered by the Bonn Graduate Center

This workshop is aimed at scientists who use R primarily for statistical data analysis, but also to process data with reproducible techniques and to present it in a modern and comprehensible way. The goal is specifically to gain statistical knowledge in an intuitive and practicable way.

Description

This workshop is aimed at scientists who use R primarily for statistical data analysis, but also to (beforehand) process data with reproducible techniques and to (afterwards) present it in an modern and comprehensible way. The goal is specifically to gain statistical knowledge in an intuitive and practicable way.
The focus of this workshop is mainly on practical application, so that the methods mentioned below and their underlying theory are explained with the help of illustrative examples.

Please note that you should have current versions of the two open-source software packages R and RStudio installed before the beginning of the course (further information will follow after registering sucessfully).

Content

Data processing

  • Using the {tidyverse} packages in R
  • Further best practice recommendations in a wide variety of steps in the analysis process

Statistics

  • Efficient creation of relevant descriptive statistics (a.k.a.: How to really only need Excel for data entry)
  • Correlation and linear models (regression)
  • Single factor analysis of variance (ANOVA)
  • Critical discussion on p-values and significance

Result presentation

  • Professional creation of various graphs using {ggplot2}
