Statistics with R - an Introduction

A workshop offered by the Bonn Graduate Center

This workshop is aimed at scientists who primarily use R for statistical data analysis, but who also want to process data using reproducible techniques and present it in a modern and comprehensible way. The goal is to learn statistical knowledge in an intuitive and practical manner.

Description

This workshop is aimed at scientists who primarily use R for statistical data analysis, but who also want to process data (beforehand) using reproducible techniques and present it (afterwards) in a modern and understandable way. The goal is to acquire statistical knowledge in an intuitive and practical way.

The workshop focuses primarily on practical application, so that the methods
mentioned below and their underlying theory are explained using illustrative
examples.

Please note that you should have the current versions of the two open-source software
packages R and RStudio installed before the course begins (further information
will follow after successful registration).

Content

  • Use of the {tidyverse} packages in R
  • Efficient creation of relevant descriptive statistics
  • Correlation and linear models (regression)
  • Critical discussion of p-values and significance
  • Professional creation of various graphs using {ggplot2}

Feedback from Participants

"It was easy to follow Paul, he explained everything step by step. His script and his additional sources were super helpful. I can understand R way better now! " (Participant 2023)

"The presenter was great! The exercises in between were also quite fun! " (Participant 2023)

"Paul is a great instructor and I enjoyed the way the workshop was structured. It was very well-paced and he made sure that everyone understood each concept before moving on to new chapters. Personally, I was very rusty in my statistics knowledge at the beginning but I feel that I have learned a lot and will use the new skills I acquired in my future research. The online format was also very convenient, and there were enough breaks to ensure that everyone was focused and engaged throughout the workshop. All in all a 10/10 experience."  (Participant 2024)
