Resilient Researcher: Building Stress Competence during Your Doctorate

A workshop offered by the Bonn Graduate Center

Academic tasks and administration, tutoring and teaching, partner projects… and family first of all! You can feel the stress building up even while reading this. Being asked to do everything at once and straight away is an integral part of daily life in academia. This workshop uses cognitive stress models to show how stress is triggered and the ways in which it can be reduced and avoided.

Description

As a resilient researcher you developed strategies that allow you to cope with the
pressures of academic life. As a resilient researcher you are able to reduce stress and to
rebound more quickly from stressful episodes. This workshop uses cognitive stress
models to show how stress is triggered and the ways in which it can be reduced and
avoided. We focus on the mental competence of identifying and changing those thoughts
and beliefs which trigger and increase stress (i.e. perfectionism). We also reflect upon the
regenerative competence of keeping tension low and energy high. And we discuss and
test some relaxation techniques.

  • Stressors in academia
  • Mechanisms of stress emergence and consequences of stress
