Argumentation in Scientific Writing

A workshop offered by the Bonn Graduate Center

Scientists have to be able to present their arguments in a precise and convincing way.
However, when writing their papers, many scientists rely on intuition rather than on
concrete methods. This workshops provides participants with all the techniques they need to know in order to state their arguments precisely, correctly and convincingly.

Description

The workshops starts with the basic concepts of reasoning and logic: validity and soundness of arguments, deductive and inductive reasoning, common types of logical inferences. From these basics, we derive useful techniques for argumentation in scientific texts.

Participants get the chance to apply the acquired skills directly to their own work, and they
get extensive individual feedback from the trainer after the course.

Content

  • Basic concepts of logic
  • Deductive vs. inductive arguments
  • Basic argument-patterns
  • The logical structure of scientific texts and talks
  • Writing style

Feedback from Participants

"The course was excellent and managed to balance theory and practice very well. I felt that I learned a lot of new insights about argumentation that I can apply in the future and improve my writing - which came at exactly the right time for me. Overall, I very much enjoyed the course!" (Participant 2024)

"The Argumentation in Scientific Writing workshop was highly insightful and practical. It provided a clear framework for constructing logical, evidence-based arguments in academic texts. The examples and exercises helped me better understand how to build coherence and persuasiveness in scientific writing. I would strongly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their research communication skills." (Participant 2024)
