Re-politicizing Forced Migration

Vortrag
Referent/in: Prof. Dr. Cindy Horst
Inhalt:

Refugees are understood in academic debates as a sub-category of migrants, and ‘forced migration’ is seen as a – difficult to distinguish – part of migration. This trend is guided by policy concerns related to identifying who is a refugee or not; who has the right to receive protection and who does not. However, movement is not what defines refugee life histories most; experiencing human rights violation and inhuman and degrading treatment often shapes human lives to a much greater extent. In this lecture, I will discuss the importance of re-politicizing forced migration, acknowledging that the reasons for flight are highly political, refugees are conscious political subjects, and refugee flows have always been a matter of high politics.
