Graduate Programs in Humanities



Most graduate institutions at the Faculty of Arts place specific value on internationalization, such as German Studies, Romance Studies and Philosophy. In addition, a Bonn International Graduate School (BIGS) is located in Oriental and Asian Studies. Doctoral students in archeology and ancient history can apply at the corresponding Graduate Research Schools.

Trinational Graduate College "European Founding Myths in Literature, Arts und Music" [in German/French/Italian]

The Graduate School, which is jointly organized by the Universities of Bonn, Florence and Paris Sorbonne IV, allows inter-disciplinary PhD studies focusing on the topic of European founding myths.



Bonn International Graduate School for Development Research (BIGS-DR)

With its research topics, this interdisciplinary program links perspectives of the Faculties of Law and Economics, Philosophy and Agriculture. In its international and interdisciplinary focus, it is unique in Europe.




Digital Society NRW

In order to meet the challenges of an increasingly digital society, the sate government of North Rhine-Westphalia has initiated the "Digital Society NRW" funding line with the particular focus of strengthening and securing democracy.







DFG Research Training Group "Archaeology of Pre-Modern Economies" (GRK 1878)

Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft since 2013, the Graduate School focuses on understanding the economic systems and economic regions of pre-modern societies. This Graduate School is jointly sponsored by the Universities of Bonn and of Cologne.



German Studies, Comparative Literature and Culture



Structured Doctoral Program in German Studies (SPP) [in German]

The SPP provides a program for all PhD students at the Institute for German, Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies. The focus is on supporting PhD students' subject-matter initiatives.



German-Italian Doctoral College [in German]

The bi-national Kolleg in German provides structured PhD studies for German and Italian PhD students with phases spent at the University of Bonn and at the partner university in Florence. There are 1-2 grants/year.



History/Ancient History



Trinational Graduate College "Mass and Integration in Antique Societies" [in German/French]

Supported by the Deutsch-Französische Hochschule since 2011, the tri-national Graduate School in Ancient History offers curriculum events in Bonn, Berne, and Strasbourg.



Oriental and Asian Studies

Bonn International Graduate School Oriental and Asian Studies (BIGS-OAS)

The BIGS-OAS focuses on researching the cultures and societies of Asia and Asia Minor. The Graduate School includes a vast curricular offering within a research-focused context.






Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Programme "Philosophies européennes contemporaines"

The Erasmus Mundus PhD program in cooperation with the Universities of Padua, Louvain, Toulouse, and the École Normale Supérieur in Paris focuses on the European philosophical canon of the 19th and 20th centuries.



Romance Studies



Trinational Doctoral Program in Italian Studies [in German/Italian]

In cooperation with the Universities of Florence and Paris-Sorbonne IV, the University of Bonn has been offering a PhD studies program in Italian Studies (admission restrictions apply) since 2006.
