German language (DaF) A 1.1

Tuesdays, from 8.00 a.m. till 10:00 a.m., Online course + one hour e-learning per week 

Starting from October 27, 2020, ending February 9, 2021
 
Course objectives
 
This competence based and action-oriented language course is for graduates who want to cope with everyday life in German and, in particular, want to become competent in academic and work situations.
Graduates attain the level A1.1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) and after completing the course can:
  • cope with familiar everyday situations with basic and pre-packaged formulations and sentences,
  • react to simple questions,
  • communicate in simple tasks, provided the other person speaks slowly,
  • read short, simple sentences with familiar vocabulary and basic grammar,
  • write basic texts.

 

Key skills 

Development of social and intercultural communicative competence in the target language, strengthening of learner autonomy and media competence.
 
Course content

 

The focal points of the language course in the development of speaking, writing, listening and reading skills are, amongst others:
  • greeting and saying goodbye to someone
  • introducing oneself (course of study, where a person lives,…)
  • ask a question/express a request

Requirements
 
We would like to ask you complete a placement test before registering for the German course. Below, you will find a link that leads you to an online-test that allows you to assess your level in German.
 
Please note:
  • The test consists of 64 questions. Allow approximately one hour for the test.
  • Make sure you will not be disturbed while completing the test.
  • Please use a computer, not a smart phone.
  • As the test includes audios, please ensure that your computer can play those.
  • The test covers the levels A1- C1.
The further you proceed in the test, the more challenging the questions become. Please leave out questions you cannot answer and finish the test once you have reached the point at which all the questions are too difficult.
After closing the test, you will receive an email with your result. Please save a screenshot or print of your result (with the score clearly visible). If you receive a confirmation of participation by email you will be asked to submit your results with a score of 0-24 points to ensure you are enrolled in the most suitable course for your needs.

To attend to this course a score of 0-24 points is required. If you are above this range please register your interest for a German course according to your score with your BIGS coordinator.

 

Target group
Doctoral candidates from all subject areas. 
 
Certificate
Participants who complete the entire course will receive a certificate confirming their attendance at the end of the semester. Missing two lessons and one e-learning session will be excused.
