Tenure Track
Tenure Track
At the University of Bonn, the tenure track professorship as a career path has been established since 2009. When a junior professorship is advertised ‘Tenure Track’ is the commitment that after a trial period and a successful evaluation process a life time professorship is available. From the University of Bonn’s point of view, the establishment of Tenure Track as a career path is the natural and consistent development of the junior professorship.
The goal of Tenure Track procedures is to attract and retain outstanding young scientists. After the successful interim and final evaluation, the Tenure Track professorship becomes a lifelong position as full professor, thus offering an attractive career path with prospects. More than half of the junior professors working at the University of Bonn were appointed in Tenure Track procedures, so our experience with the model is very positive. In particular, those appointed in Tenure Track procedures are, on average, younger. In addition, more international and female researchers were appointed than in traditional appointment procedures.
Readingversion of the central Tenure Track Regulation
The official announcements in the legally binding [in German] version can be found here:
- Regulation for the intermediate and final evaluation of Tenure Track professorships [in German]
- Amendment to the regulation for the intermediate and final evaluation of the Tenure Track professorships [in German]
Every faculty forms a Tenure Track committee, which accompanies the tenure track process over the entire period, from the call to the final evaluation.
The central Tenure Track committee issues a recommendation on the basis of the respective Tenure Track dossier, the votes of the Tenure Track committee of the faculty and the faculty council regarding the extension or continuation of the Junior Professorship to the Rectorate. The Central Tenure Track committee corresponds to the appointment committee in accordance to the appointment rules.
There are two models of Tenure Track professorship at the University of Bonn
a) Appointment to a W1 Tenure Track professorship
- The first phase is limited to three years
- In case of successful interim evaluation, three subsequent years (second phase)
- In the event of a positive end-of-term evaluation, permanent employment at W2
b) Appointment to a W2 Tenure Track Professorship:
- Appointment for a term of 5 years
- After 2 years, an intermediate evaluation will be carried out
- In the case of a positive final evaluation a lifelong position is offered
