Honorary doctorate for Rector Michael Hoch Waseda University Tokyo honors commitment to long-term partnership

The Rector of the University of Bonn, Prof. Dr. Michael Hoch, has received an honorary doctorate from Waseda University in Tokyo. Professor Hoch is currently visiting various partner institutions in Japan with a high-ranking delegation from the University of Bonn. By awarding the doctorate, renowned Waseda University recognizes Professor Hoch's commitment to the research collaboration of the two universities.

The developmental biologist, Michael Hoch, is only the tenth German to be awarded the honorary doctorate of Waseda University. Previous recipients include renowned personalities such as Federal Presidents Roman Herzog (1997) and Richard von Weizsäcker (2005).

Professor Hoch set up the Life and Medical Sciences Institute (LIMES) at the University of Bonn. Since 2006 he has been committed to an academic exchange program with Waseda University. Well over 100 scientists, students and doctoral students have participated in various exchange programs, symposia and workshops since then.

"His tireless support for Waseda’s efforts to advance science and engineering and human resource development has greatly strengthened the academic tie and friendship between the two universities," said a statement from the Japanese University said. Waseda University expresses its great respect and admiration for Professor Hoch's extraordinary academic achievements.

The award ceremony was held during "Bonn Day" to mark the the partnership between both universities, which was founded in 1960. In the coming year, Bonn University will hold a "Waseda Day" during its 200th anniversary celebrations.

Rector Professor Hoch received his appointment certificate from Waseda President Kaoru Kamata. The freshly assigned honorary doctor thanked his hosts and said: "I accept this award also in recognition of all those who have contributed to the university partnership Bonn-Waseda for 57 years. It is one of the most stable and intense links between the University of Bonn and Asia. I am proud to have contributed as a scientist and as the Rector."
