Shanghai Ranking: a huge success for the University of Bonn The University of Bonn ranks 70th in the global university ranking and climbs to 4th place in Germany.

The University of Bonn is one of the four best universities in Germany and achieved rank 70 globally in of the 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Ranking). That is not least due to the outstanding achievements within subject areas. Mathematics, economics and agricultural sciences are exceptionally successful in international comparison, ranking 30th, 35th and 46th place. In Germany, Bonn’s mathematics and economics are in first place and agricultural sciences rank in 3rd place.

Since 2003, the Shanghai Ranking has been rating universities based on various indicators, the focus being on research. It considers scientific publications, citations, Nobel Prizes and also the Fields Medal. In the current Shanghai Ranking, the University of Bonn ranks on position 70, behind the German Heidelberg University (47), the University of Munich (52) and the Technical University of Munich (57). This makes Bonn the fourth best university in Germany.

Mathematics at the University of Bonn rank 30th worldwide in the Shanghai Ranking, making it the leading German university in this field. This also applies to economics at the University of Bonn, ranking 35th worldwide. Bonn’s agricultural sciences are also among the top 50, ranking 46th
worldwide and 3rd in Germany. Physics and human biological sciences are placed in the group ranking 51-75. Biological sciences, water resources, atmospheric sciences and dentistry form part of the group ranking 76-100 and thus are each among the top 6 in Germany. Medical technology is in the cohort 101-150 and computer science, earth sciences, pharmacy and statistics falling into the group ranking 151-200.

The Rector of the University of Bonn, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Hoch, is pleased about the outstanding research achievements of the subjects and faculties. "This placement," says the Rector, "once again documents our international visibility as a top German university and also impressively confirms our recent successes in the national Excellence Strategy competition, as the most successful German university with six research Clusters of Excellence and the status of a University of Excellence. In the next few years, together with the faculties, we would like to position as many of our subjects in research and teaching as possible on an international level in such a way that we can attract the most gifted talents from all career stages in the national and international competition. This is also of great importance for the city and region. Our goal is to develop Bonn into one of the leading science and innovation hubs in Germany over the next few years.”

Prof. Dr. Andreas Zimmer, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, is pleased about “the international competitiveness of research in Bonn, which becomes evident in the current Shanghai Ranking.” Professor Zimmer adds that "now it is not just about maintaining our rank but improving it further.” The Provost of the University of Bonn, Holger Gottschalk, is delighted with this excellent result and at the same time motivated by the university administration’s aim to, "provide researches with the best conditions for conducting excellent research.”
