Joachim von Braun to chair the Scientific Group for the UN Food System Summit Prof. Joachim von Braun helps to prepare the 2021 UN Food System Summit

UN Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohamed has invited Professor Joachim von Braun, Director of Center for Development Research of University of Bonn (ZEF) to chair the Scientific Group for the Food System Summit of the UN Secretary General, which shall be held in 2021.

“The agenda of the Summit is to transform the food system to meet the combined challenges of food security, malnutrition, climate change, natural resource degradation, and economic well-being” said von Braun “and it will obviously be deeply impacted by the tasks to rebuild a resilient system after COVID-19 crisis.”

The Summit will be convened in the context of the United Nations Decade of Action to deliver the SDGs. In line with the overall objectives of the Decade of Action, the aim of the Summit is to help countries and stakeholders in all parts of the world understand and maximize the benefits of a food systems approach across the entire 2030 Agenda.

The Summit will also offer a catalytic moment for global public mobilization and actionable commitments by various stakeholders to invest in diverse ways to make food systems inclusive, climate adapted and resilient, and support sustainable peace. As the Chair of the Scientific Group, von Braun is entrusted to lead a committee of twenty-five internationally renowned experts to deliver on this mandate, and to do so while also engaging with diverse networks of independent experts during the preparatory process.

In addition to his professorship at the University of Bonn, Prof. von Braun is also Vice-President of Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and President of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
