Further measures for the containment of coronavirus Coronavirus: University of Bonn postpones exams and interrupts teaching

Exams postponed, teaching interrupted

The Rectorate of the University of Bonn, in agreement with the faculties, has decided on further measures with the aim of slowing down the spread of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). In particular, as of Monday, 16 March 2020, all examinations in the University's area of responsibility originally planned for the coming weeks will be cancelled and postponed to a later date. As things stand at present, the examinations are to be made up for before the start of the summer semester's lectures.

In special cases it is possible to conduct examinations in a form that does not require personal contact between examiners and students. This requires the explicit consent of the examiners and examinee, which must be recorded in writing prior to the examination. Alternative examination formats can be used. The decision lies with the respective examination committee in consultation with the examiners.

State examinations are not subject to this decision, as they do not underlie the supervision of the University of Bonn, but of the state examination offices.

Libraries discontinue reference operations

From Saturday, March 14, Bonn’s University and State Library (ULB) has closed its reading rooms. Books can still be borrowed at the times published on the ULB’s homepage. The decentralized libraries of the institutes and seminars will be closed from Sunday, March 15, until further notice. Faculties can make arrangements for hardship cases under their own responsibility in individual cases. This information will be found as soon as possible on the corresponding homepages.

Teaching will be interrupted

Ongoing courses such as lectures, seminars or lab courses are generally interrupted if they cannot be continued online. Further information, including information on any existing exceptions, can be found on BASIS or on the faculties' websites. Teachers are asked to extend deadlines for the submission of assignments if necessary.

The Rectorate has set up task forces for research, teaching and University operations. If the situation eases in the coming days and weeks, the Rectorate will announce new regulations. Students are encouraged to consult the websites of their study programs and eCampus regularly.

Enrollment for the summer semester by mail

If you would like to enroll for the summer semester 2020 at the University of Bonn in the coming weeks, you can do so in writing (i.e. by mail). It is not necessary to appear in person at the Registrar's Office. The required documents can be submitted as copies that have been authenticated by public bodies.
