International Science City Bonn

Bonn is one of Germany’s growth regions and, despite the fact that more than 15 years have now elapsed since the parliament and much of the government moved to Berlin, it is more international than ever.

When the parliament moved away, Bonn did not bury its head in the sand. On the contrary, Bonn has continued to pursue its goal of becoming an international hub for research and sustainable development with as much dedication as ever - and with no small success as the facts prove.

Science City

Apart from the University of Bonn and the four universities of applied science in the region, there are numerous research institutions situated in Bonn, such as the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), the Max Planck Society and many other important institutes like the Centre of Advanced European Studies and Research (caesar) which focuses on user-oriented basic research in the neurosciences. Other outstanding research institutes include the Life & Brain research center and the newly founded Helmholtz Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases.

In addition, Bonn also hosts the most important science organizations: The German Research Foundation (DFG), the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

UN City

In recent years, Bonn flourished internationally due to the United Nations (UN) organizations located in the city. With 18 UN institutions, Bonn is these days one of the most important UN locations in Europe and a research hub for sustainable development. Next to the Vice-Rectorate in Europe of the United Nations University, two further UNU institutes have been established in Bonn.

The University of Bonn and the UNU initiated a joint Master Program “Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security”, and researchers from both universities collaborate closely in a wide range of research projects.

Sustainability Hub

The numerous research institutions and international organizations are a special strength and unique feature of Bonn. As a result, there are various chances to establish research collaboration in globally relevant research areas, such as “Human Security”, “Climate and Water Research”, “Biological Diversity” or “Food and Nutrition”. In this context, the University of Bonn established in 2012 the Coordination Unit “Sustainable Development in International Cooperation” within its International Office. The Coordinaton Unit contributes to shaping Bonn’s profile as an internationally well-reputed future lab and to connecting national and international stakeholders.

The University of Bonn, the DFG and the City of Bonn agree in theircommon strategy paper from 2014 that established networks and cooperations shall be further enhanced in the future and that the potential of Bonn’s unique features shall be fully exploited in the coming years.
