The Geochemistry/Petrology section of the Institute of Geosciences (IfGeo), invites applications for a position of a full time

Research Scientist and Lecturer in Isotope Geochemistry / Petrology, with temporary civil servant status (“Akademische*r Rätin*Rat)

to be filled starting October 1, 2025, for a period of three years, extendible to 6 years subject to performance.

Geochemistry/Petrology 

The Geochemistry/Petrology section at IfGeo carries out research in the fields of petrology, petrophysics, structural geology and geochemistry of the Earth's crust and mantle, and it provides teaching and scientific training in Geosciences for students at the Bachelor / Master / Doctoral levels. Section facilities include a piston cylinder press, a Netzsch differential thermo analyser, several powder diffractometers, a JEOL JXA-8200 electron microprobe (to be upgraded to a new EPMA within the next 2-3 years), a Thermo Scientific ELEMENT XR high-resolution inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer (to be coupled with a new ESI imageGEO193 excimer laser ablation system for geochemical microanalysis), two Horiba Scientific Raman spectrometers, and a clean laboratory dedicated to highly siderophile element geochemistry.

Your tasks

  • teaching lessons in petrology and in-situ analytical methods at both the Bachelor and Master level (teaching load 4 SWS)
  • (scientific) operation and maintenance of the isotope geochemical clean laboratories and the LA-ICPMS facility,
  • Developing and setting up new geochemical procedures to widen the spectrum of the current research at IfGeo towards lithophile isotopic systems (radiogenic and stable) in high- and low-temperature environments,
  • The candidate will be expected to strengthen their own research profile through SCI publications and to contribute to ongoing research projects through co-supervision of BSc and MSc students.

Your profile

We are seeking a highly motivated researcher

  • with a doctorate in Geochemistry and/or Petrology,
  • with expertise in the analytical methods used for in-situ geochemical and/or bulk isotope geochemical research,
  • showing a good record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations in international conferences,
  • able to work well in a team,
  • having excellent English language skills, and showing the willingness and ability to communicate in German at the B1 level within three years.

 Welcome additional assets would be

  • experience in experimental petrology and/or isotope geochemical microanalysis,
  • prior undergraduate teaching experience,
  • prior experience in supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students.
