BONN*E FÊTE – 60 Jahre Elysée-Vertrag! Frankreich-Jahr der Universität Bonn 2022/23

On January 22, 1963, Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer signed the so-called Elysée Treaty, a historic agreement on Franco-German cooperation. 60 years later, the duo is facing major challenges in and with Europe. Reason enough to renew the Franco-German cooperation also in the university context on the occasion of the anniversary. Between October 2022 and March 2023, the Vice Rectorate for International Affairs, the university's French Centre Ernst Robert Curtius (CERC) and the Institut français Bonn will jointly address Franco-German topics from the past, present and future in at least one event per month. The kick-off takes place on the occasion of the International Days with a two-day conference of the Centre Ernst Robert Curtius (CERC).

The Universities of Cologne and Bonn set up the Cologne/Bonn Academy in Exile (CBA) in June of this year. The new academy aims to support the work of high-profile researchers forced to flee their home countries as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The academy is inviting Ukrainian researchers to continue their work in Cologne and Bonn. However, it is also supporting researchers of other nationalities who have been affected by the war, such as Belarusians and Russians facing persecution for opposing it.

With the academy focusing primarily on law, history, cultural studies and linguistics, projects in the fields of comparative politics, comparative law, comparative linguistics and European history are playing a particularly important role.

This event will begin with the CBA’s founding members explaining its objectives and services in more depth. Afterwards, Dr. Kateryna Kobchenko of the Department for East European History at the University of Münster will speak on "On the history of a university in exile: the Ukrainian Free University in Munich after 1945". This will be followed by an open discussion with the audience.

Organized by Prof. Dr. Birgit Ulrike Münch (Vice Rector for International Affairs, University of Bonn), Prof. Dr. Johanna Hey (Vice-President for International Affairs, University of Cologne) and Prof. Dr. Martin Aust (Department of Eastern European History, part of the Department of History, University of Bonn)

Musical intervention: "Duet" by Ari Benjamin Meyers

Monday, 24 October 2022

Time: 12:00 – 4:00 pm CET

Venue: Courtyard, Main Building – Am Hof 1, 53113 Bonn

Registration required: No

The upcoming International Days will feature as a very special highlight a performative exhibition of works by renowned American composer and artist Ari Benjamin Meyers. Rather than being performed in regular concert halls, Meyers’ works usually appear at art institutions— come see his piece “Duet” on the University campus and you will find out why.

Performed at the OFF Biennale Cairo among many other international venues since 2014, “Duet” (like several of his works) is conceived of principally as an ‘intervention’ in and through which social structures and the possibilities of communication via music are explored. For this performative art, singers will be positioned in the courtyard of the University Main Building who will invite passers by to join them in making music together. If you are on campus that day and walking through the Palace, you will have a chance to become part of the intervention and experience “a composition for two strangers”, when asked “Would you like to sing with me?”

Ari Meyers will be giving a talk that evening at the University on his artistic approach and various other projects (see below).

Lecture A. B. Meyers: Rehearsing the Future. On the Kunsthalle for Music and Some Recent Works

Montag, 24. Oktober 2022

Time: 7:00 – 8:30 pm CET

Venue: Main Building, Hörsaal XI – Am Hof 1, 53113 Bonn

Registration required: Yes

Born in New York City in 1972, Ari Benjamin Meyers studied at the famous Juilliard School, at Yale University and at the Peabody Institute. He has worked with top-flight international classical music ensembles, with popular bands like Einstürzende Neubauten and Chicks on Speed and with artists like Tino Sehgal and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster. Meyers was Artist in Residence with the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn for the 2021/22 season.

Meyers’ performative works and installations are of a nature relating to the fine arts, and in 2017 he institutionalized his approach by founding the “Kunsthalle for Music”. This international museum has no fixed location, going nomadically on the road to places like Rotterdam and Hong Kong for musical performances and exhibitions of music-related art. Meyers sees himself as a composer, in the broadest sense: “For me, composition is a kind of tool, a tool to bring together artistic, theoretical and socio-political modes of production.” For a public project entitled “Rehearsing Philadelphia” he applied principles of musical rehearsal to explore possibilities together with the city’s residents around collective action and shaping society, with the slogan: “The future will be rehearsed, not perfected.”
