A career in academia is what appeals to you, but you are not really sure which paths exist and which path to take? In the key-note you will gain an overview of the postdoctoral stage in general and get to know relevant competencies and accomplishments to develop.

Speaker: Dr. Sibel Vurgun

Dr. Sibel Vurgun has been working in research management since 2006. She has gained experience at various universities and is an expert in the promotion of early-career researchers. Currently, she works at the Technische Hochschule Köln where she is in charge of the project “Karriereentwicklungsprogramm PLan_CV”.

After the keynote, you will have the opportunity to attend the two workshops you selected when registering. The workshops are listed below.

Besides their expertise within a given field and an excellent track record, future professors and group leaders need professional competencies such as IT- or networking skills or strategic thinking. This applies especially to doctoral students who want to continue their career inside science. While being a doctoral student it can at times be quite difficult to decide between different career options and paths. In the workshop we will highlight required skill sets for specific work contexts within science, we explore your own qualifications and competencies as well as goals and preferences. Ending the short inputs you will be able noting down concrete action plans.

Trainer: Dr. Alexandra Leipold

In this impulse workshop, you will learn the tools and techniques that make writing job applications in academia more successful. We will focus on the key elements of interpreting job descriptions writing a persuasive Academic CV and cover letter and identifying your strengths and successes.

Trainer: Bridie McHale

Intercultural awareness has become a key competence, in the private sector as well as in academia. But many times this competence remains undiscovered, because either we don't know that we have it or we don't know how to gain it. In this workshop we will dive into the world of cognitive biases, learn how to gain more intercultural awareness and apply it in your job as a researcher.

Trainer: Dr. Merjam Wakili

Time to grab a cup of coffee and a slice of cake and to socialize with your peers.

Get ready for the second round! See the workshop descriptions above.

We will close the event with a short wrap-up and some take-home messages.

Let's socialize and network! You are welcome to join us for some drinks and finger food.
