Setting the course for your future career

Discover Your Potential for a Career beyond Academia

An online event for international doctoral students offered by the Bonn Graduate Center and the International Office.

Presenting research, leading discussions, coping with uncertainties - doctoral students acquire a broad set of transferable skills during their doctorate. What they often don't know is that these skills are also highly sought after by employers in industry and other non-academic sectors.

This years' day for international doctoral students “Discover Your Potential for a Career beyond Academia” in the “Careers with a Doctorate” series, will focus on competencies gained in research which are also invaluable for a career beyond academia. Participants will gain awareness of the skills they already have and on how to best showcase these on the non-academic job market.

After the key-note, participants will attend the three workshops they selected when registering to gain first insights into different skills and learn how they can deepen them during their doctorate to be best prepared for their next career step.

The workshops are listed below.

Intercultural awareness has become a key competence, particularly in the private sector. Knowing the "script" and typical pitfalls helps to master intercultural encounters. In this interactive workshop, we dive into the world of cognitive biases and learn how to gain more intercultural competence.

Trainer: Dr. Merjam Wakili

Do you want to know how to talk about your research in a short, concise and appealing way? In this workshop you will gain tools to create your own pitch. Learn how to share the essence of your research in a solid way and at the same time spark curiosity. This will help you to communicate effectively and start a lively conversation about your research.

Trainer: Marloes ten Kate

In a constantly changing business world, resilience is a key skill. This workshop answers the question “what is resilience?”, and explores how it can help us cope with stress, change, and uncertainty. Participants will learn basic techniques for building resilience and how to integrate them into their day-to-day lives. We will also discuss how to incorporate resilience into goal setting and planning to improve long-term health and productivity outcomes.

Trainer: Dr. Síofra McSherry

Do you find yourself drinking coffee alone at events? Do you seem to miss every chance to network? Or do you have the feeling you can’t keep the conversation going or can’t even get it started in the first place? No matter what kind of a career path you’re pursuing, networking and small talk are fundamental skills important for everybody’s development.

Trainer:  Peter Kronenberg5

Meetings - they take up much of our time and many people respond to a meeting invitation or a discussion with a weary sigh. This workshop focuses on the use of techniques which will ensure that meetings stay focussed on a topic and an aim and how to communicate both of them. This skill is relevant in any job context, but particularly in the private sector where ineffective meetings can have financial ramifications for the company.

Trainer: Dr. Jan Schmidt

The formal part of the event will be closed with a short wrap-up before participants move to another online platform for the virtual get-together.

This part takes place on the platform Wonder6. Participants will have the chance to socialize with their peers and the workshop trainers.
