DESCRIPTION:Grendel’s mother is famously silent in Beowulf\, uttering no
 t a single word of dialogue during her time in the narrative\, and the sil
 ence surrounding her begins even before her entrance and extends beyond he
 r death. Working from this collection of indirect evidence\, I argue that 
 the poem presents Grendel’s mother—and her silence—as occupying a sp
 ace between and combining men and women\, a trans space that refuses categ
 orization and reveals the fallacy of binary divisions of sex and gender.
