DESCRIPTION:Dr. Hendrik Rohland: The Urban Centers of the Medieval Empires
of the Steppes: Results of Archaeological Research in Mongolia\n\nThe med
ieval nomad empires where important agents in world history. Their histori
cal importance extends beyond military events like the Mongol invasions. T
ime and again\, the nomads of the steppes formed larger polities and empir
es with cultural relationships to their sedentary neighbours. More often t
han not\, the Orkhon valley in Mongolia was the core region of such politi
es. During the last millenia\, different nomadic groups and their rulers h
ave left their traces here.\nThe lecture provides insights into the resear
ch activities of the German Archaeological Institute and its Mongolian par
tners at the sites of the capitals of the successive Uigur and Mongolian E
mpires. The findings from these research highlight the international entan
glements of the medieval nomadic elites.
