DESCRIPTION:The war in Ukraine overshadows the conflicts and crises in the
  Near and Middle East. They are destabilising the area once called the Fer
 tile Crescent. Syria and its neighbouring regions are affected by civil wa
 r\, the power struggle of regional and international actors and the disast
 rous consequences of an earthquake at the beginning of 2023. \n\nWhat poli
 tical and economic prospects does Syria have? Will the different ethnic an
 d religious groups of the divided country find a common way back to a peac
 eful modus vivendi? What are the sources of potential conflicts in the fut
 ure? The lecture will examine these problems from a historical and geopoli
 tical perspective. They will be analysed in more detail during the subsequ
 ent discussion.\n\nThe event starts with an input by Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Ha
 ns-Ulrich Seidt\, former Ambassador. The following discussion is led by Pr
 of. Dr. Ulrich Schlie (CASSIS).
