DESCRIPTION:Miklos Balint is interested in functional environmental genomi
cs\, long-term biodiversity dynamics\, community ecology and molecular met
hods for biodiversity research. He is head of the research group 'Function
al environmental genomics’ at LOEWE Centre for translational biodiversit
y genomics. He investigates genomics of soil invertebrates\, a major part
of unknown biodiversity. It is estimated that for every known species the
re are about 20 that are still undescribed. These invertebrates are import
ant contributors of ecosystem services essential for humanity\, such as di
sease control\, nutrient cycling\, soil formation\, or even primary produc
 tion.
