Shape your career

Leadership Skills for the Non-Academic Job Market

A workshop offered by the Bonn Graduate Center.

Leadership is not for the chosen few at the top, it is for everyone of us. We can lead ourselves, others, or entire organizations. Leadership is also required everywhere, be it in academia, industry, or consulting, in the professional, private, and social realm. This workshop will introduce you to the topic of leadership and help you to acquire awareness about your own leadership style, as well as competences of effective leadership.

Course Description

Having invested considerable energy and time into years of research and being primarily judged based on your academic achievements, you as a young academic might not be aware, neither of your talent and experience to lead others, nor of the relevance that leadership has for pursuing a career. In addition, you might not value the many experiences you have made at the university, that could help you to succeed in leadership positions outside academia, be it consulting, industry, government or creative services. This workshop will introduce you to the topic of leadership and help them to acquire awareness about your own leadership style, as well as competences of effective leadership. It involves becoming aware of the relevance and power of individual experiences in academia for your future career and the improvement of your “inner” and “outer game” of leadership. While the inner game is concerned with attitude, mindset, and consciousness, the outer game deals with knowledge and skills. The workshop will address both sides of the leadership medal.

While the trainer will draw on his leadership practice in- and outside academia, it is not expected that you as a participant will have practical leadership experience.
