This workshop conveys basic knowledge of statistics regardless of any field of research or software. You will be introduced to statistics, learn the basic terms and methods to obtain and analyze relevant data for your research.

Course Content

  • Causality and Statistics
  • Observational vs Experimental Studies
  • Types of Studies: Surveys, Studies, Cohort Studies, Case-Control Studies
  • Basic Concepts in Statistics: P-value; Significance; Size matters; Confidence Interval
  • How to encode collected data (Excel, SPSS, Stata, R,…)
  • Analyzing your data descriptively and inferentially
  • Dealing with multidimensional problems
  • Dealing with panel data
  • Using graphs when models are really complex (Strutural Equation Modeling SEM)

Course Description


This workshop conveys basic knowledge of statistics regardless of any field of research or software. You will be introduced to statistics, learn the basic terms and methods to obtain and analyze relevant data for your research.

In order to be able to perform the practical execises, participants need to have installed the statistic programs SPSS and STATA on their PC when attending the workshop. A test version can be found online free of charge.

Learning Goals:

  • Statistical problems, concepts, models, procedures (causality, p-value, confidence interval, generalized linear model, type of studies)
  • How to collect and analyze quantitative data (type of data, tips and tricks, why not just Excel?, compare statistical packages, demonstrate examples)
