Self-Management in Science
A workshop offered by the Bonn Graduate Center.
Scientific work is more like a marathon than a sprint. The success of a doctoral thesis, for example, is the result of several years of research, while short-term successes are the exception rather than the rule in everyday academic life. This framework of scientific qualification results in special challenges for self-management: self-discipline, frustration tolerance and dealing with the loss of motivation are just some of these challenges that have to be mastered during a doctorate.

Course Description
This hands-on workshop teaches self-management skills which are useful to build up working routines and create realistic time schedules for dissertation projects. The participants reflect under which conditions they perform most productively. They analyze the inner drivers for their work and their personal challenges and “time thieves”. Apart from this the workshop focuses on work-life balance and the question how to keep up the ability to work on the long run of a research project.
The workshop´s methods include individual and group work, input and plenum discussions and the attendees will benefit from sharing their experiences with peers and with the trainer. In addition they will leave the course with a "first-aid-kit" containing their individual remedies against the smaller or larger setbacks of scientific work.
