Managing the Doctorate and Your Supervision

A BIGS workshop offered by the Bonn Graduate Center

This workshop teaches skills for managing the doctorate and its supervision as a project. The first day takes a look at the framework conditions and success factors of doctoral projects - from one's own academic competences and self-leadership skills to the professional organisation of the supervisory relationship. The second day provides an overview of classic and agile project management techniques and presents a selection of project management skills that help to plan the doctoral project. Based on what they have learned, participants plan the next 3-6 months of their project on the third day.

Description

The first day takes a look at the framework conditions and success factors of doctoral projects - from one's own academic competences and self-leadership skills to the professional organisation of the supervisory relationship. The main focus will be on how doctoral students can proactively shape the supervisory relationship. In addition, a look will be taken at peer coaching structures.
The second day provides an overview of classic and agile project management techniques and presents a selection of project management skills that help to plan the doctoral project. Participants learn to set SMART goals for their project and to create work breakdown structures and multi-month plans (Gantt charts).
Based on what they have learned, participants plan the next 3-6 months of their project on the third day. They assess project risks, develop ideas on how to respond to them and exchange ideas with the peer group and with the trainer on how to deal with challenges and setbacks in their project.

The workshop methods range from trainer input and individual project planning to group work and plenary discussions. The course is rounded off by a "Survival Kit PhD", where participants benefit from sharing their experiences with their peers and with the trainer.
All in all, the approach of the workshop is to demystify the doctoral process by presenting the path to your doctorate as a management task that can be planned.

Please note: This event is not a self and time management workshop. This means that we will not focus on weekly and daily time planning, but on the medium-term planning of your projects.
