Description
The publication of new research insights constitutes a central aspect of the scientific work. By publishing the doctoral thesis, doctorate students prove their ability to conduct scientific work independently. Even during the preceding postgraduate work, many doctoral students publish their work in scientific journals. In the case of cumulative theses, such publications even form the central part of the work.
In this course we will have a basic look at the publication of doctoral theses and journal
papers. We will show you where you can find the respective regulations of your faculty.
Furthermore, we will provide you with a general overview over of copyright in regard to
scientific publications. However, as we are no legal experts, we cannot provide any legal
advice.
Furthermore, we will exemplify the common procedure of publishing in scientific journals.
In this context, we will also discuss related concepts like Peer Review, Open Access,
Creative Commons Licences and scientometric factors (e.g. the Journal Impact Factor,
JIF). In the last part, we will discuss the phenomenon of Predatory Publishing and Fake Science and get to know some tools that might help to spot and avoid such dishonest practices.
