Pursuing a Doctorate often means working in international and multicultural research environments – in labs, research groups, and supervisory relationships. This training supports doctoral students from all faculties and institutions at the University of Bonn in developing practical intercultural communication skills for everyday academic life.

Description

This full-day training supports doctoral students from all faculties in developing practical intercultural communication skills for everyday academic life.

Focus of the Training:

  • Collaboration in multicultural research teams
    Communication styles, dealing with feedback and criticism, and building reliability and commitment in international teams
  • Supervision, hierarchies & academic cultures
    expectations, roles, hierarchies, and power relations in doctoral education

Content

  • Definitions and basics of intercultural communication and intercultural competence
  • Critical incidents from PhD contexts (research groups, labs, supervision)
  • Guided reflection and interactive exercises
  • Group work to analyze intercultural challenges in academic contexts and to develop concrete, practice-oriented strategies for action.
  • A balanced mix of theory, reflection, and practical exercises

The training offers a safe and interactive learning environment with space for exchange, reflection, and hands-on practice.

Creditable for the Micro Credential 'Communication & Impact'

Micro Credentials for doctoral students offer the opportunity to systematically add key future skills to your professional expertise. You can apply for a Micro Credential if you successfully complete at least four workshops from one area of expertise.
