THE Ranking: University of Bonn is one of the best universities in Europe

Top ratings for Bonn’s teaching, research, and academic influence

In the rankings of the 200 best European universities published by British magazine Times Higher Education (THE), the University of Bonn holds an outstanding position. It is number 39 out of all universities throughout Europe, and number 8 among all German universities. Worldwide, THE ranks the University of Bonn as one of the top 100 universities (94th place).

Compared to all the universities in Germany, Bonn takes an outstanding eighth place – the best-ranked university in North Rhine-Westphalia, well ahead of the other colleges and universities in the state. In the rankings of the 200 best European universities, only Bonn (spot 39) and Aachen (spot 48) were among the top 50.

According to THE, the University of Bonn is among the best 20 percent in the world in the areas of teaching, research and citations (as an indicator of academic influence). The university also does well in the departmental rankings: Bonn’s Physics department takes spot 48 here, while Natural Science is in 76th place and Medicine is number 100.

The ranking was based on 13 different quality indicators, including the institution’s academic reputation, third-party research funding and international networking. The first-place THE rankings are mainly held by British universities, especially Oxford and Cambridge. The top-ranked German university is LMU Munich.

The university’s Rector, Prof. Dr. Michael Hoch, was pleased about the University of Bonn’s good results: “The positive THE evaluation is further confirmation of the University of Bonn’s recent successful development. The Excellence Initiative helped us increase our visibility in the field of academia, but now our efforts to improve the quality of our studies and teaching are also bearing fruit.”
