New Dementia Centre for Bonn
Minister gives green light to multi-million project
The new 'German Centre for Research into Neuro-Degenerative Diseases'
(Deutsches Zentrum für die Erforschung Neurodegenerativer Erkrankungen, the DZNE) is coming to Bonn; Cologne and Jülich are also on board. This has just been announced by the Federal Research Minister Annette Schavan. The Federal government wants to make a total of 60 million euros available for the core unit and its 'satellites'. In addition to Bonn's University Clinic and the University of Bonn, others involved are the University of Cologne, the Jülich Research Centre and the Caesar research centre. Bonn beat its rivals in Berlin, Munich, Tübingen, Göttingen and Heidelberg.
Almost 400 researchers will analyse the causes of and investigate potential therapies for neuro-degenerative diseases at the new centre, which will be under the aegis of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres. There will be about 300 positions in the main unit of the centre, on the Venusberg campus near the Bonn University Clinic, with about 80 additional ones being located at the satellite units. The University Clinic is providing a piece of land next to the Neurocentre and the Life and Brain Institute for the Dementia Centres new home. The estimated
seven-figure construction costs will be paid for by the Federal state of North-Rhine
The experts were won over by Bonn's plan, which was marked by intelligent use of the existing strengths of the institutions involved. In addition to basic research the Centre's objective will be to turn new findings rapidly into practical applications. 'This is a great day for the Bonn Research Region,' the University of Bonns Assistant Rector for Research, Professor Max P. Baur, stated in his initial reaction. 'The new research centre will place Bonn at the cutting edge of German dementia research. It will also make North-Rhine Westphalia's status as a research location more visible internationally.'
