Project completion: Health information on the Internet
Dec 01, 2022 from 05:30 PM to 07:30 PM

"Gesucht: Verlässliche Gesundheitsinfos im Internet" Just ask "Dr. Google"? For many consumers, the Internet is the first port of call for questions about health. The skills that are helpful when dealing with online health information and how competencies can be strengthened are currently the subject of much discussion and research. In the project "Orientation aids in dealing with online health information" (OriGes), the websites www.gesund-im-netz.net for adults and www.klick2health.net for adolescents were further developed as orientation aids for dealing with online health information from 2020 to 2022. To mark the successful conclusion of the project, we cordially invite you to our public closing event. We look forward to presenting the results to you and discussing them with you. The event will take place hybrid.

Workshop: ‚Was hält die Demokratie zusammen?'
Dec 09, 2022 from 02:15 PM to 07:00 PM

"Konzeptionen des (Vor-)Politischen als Antworten auf die motivationalen Herausforderungen demokratischer Ordnungen" The "grand challenges", such as the consequences of climate change, the question of mobility and migration, as well as the rapid changes in society through digitalization and artificial intelligence, affect all people. The question of the appropriate perception, description, and interpretation of these complexes of phenomena is central, because their semantization already forms possible actors and spaces of action through the use of certain concepts, categories, linguistic images, and value patterns. Different semantizations thus lead to specific ideas of agency and integrity within the presented future scenarios. It is precisely this relationship that is to be investigated in the project. Please register via rwitteki@uni-bonn.de, briefly indicating whether you would like to participate in presence or via Zoom.

We intend to explore the significance of autonomous living in our digital societies, to question the humanist concept of autonomy itself in our technological reality and to analyse the implications of our interaction with (semi)autonomous systems.

Fall Institute: Mind-Dependent Artifact & Artifact-Dependent Mind
Sep 11, 2023 to Sep 15, 2023

Artifacts are a primary object of study in the humanities. They are products and, thus, manifestations of human thought, action, and self-determination without which they cannot be understood. At the same time, human mindedness depends on artifacts, as well as other objects – a dependence that is itself manifest in the form of artifacts themselves. Our Fall 2023 Institute will consider ways in which human mindedness and the reality of artifacts are dialectically intertwined. Of special interest will be automatically or mechanically produced artifacts, as well as artificial intelligent systems that are neither mere inert causal models of human thinking nor independently minded (let alone, conscious) entities. The ontology of such products thus needs to be calibrated in light of the aforementioned mutual dependence of mindedness and artifacts.

Networking Event TRAhoch2 – Transdisciplinary Gardening
May 17, 2023 from 03:45 PM to 07:00 PM

Great science starts with unexpected encounters! - But do we really want to wait for that? Rather, we want to provide a creative space to learn about interesting research questions outside of one's comfort zone. Specifically, with "Transdisciplinary Gardening" we would like to promote the exchange of scientists from the life sciences and medicine (TRA Life and Health) and the humanities, cultural studies and social sciences (TRA Individuals, Institutions and Societies) at the University of Bonn. We therefore invite interested scientists* to an exclusive event at the Botanical Garden to bring together research and researchers from both TRAs and discover topics and research interests together. "Garden" with us on May 17, 2023 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Please see the flyer and info sheet in the download section for more important info!

Dies Academicus - Nachhaltigkeit in den Wirtschaftswissenschaften
May 24, 2023 from 04:00 PM to 06:00 PM

Sustainability and economics - do they go together? Very well, in fact. Consumers and producers consume energy and cause pollution. Prices on markets do not adequately reflect the social costs of a product. On the other hand, markets, for example for emission certificates, can help to prevent pollution, or to reduce the costs of climate protection. Other interventions can also promote more sustainable decision-making patterns without substantially endangering economic welfare. Thus, when it comes to sustainability and climate change, the natural sciences and economics are closely intertwined. The lens of economics helps to understand causes and assess solutions. In four short lectures with space for discussion, scientists from Bonn will give an insight into their current research.
