Knowledge for Development (K4D)
The Research Group Culture, Knowledge and Development of the Department of Political and Cultural Change, Center for Development Research (ZEF) and a Singapore based research group, the “Knowledge Force” at the Lee Kong Chian School of Business, Singapore Management University (SMU), have been in the forefront of research and debate on the construction of knowledge societies, the governance and management of knowledge for development. Research has been carried out on
• knowledge sharing and the transfer of knowledge
• development experts and consultants
• the globalisation of knowledge: local and global knowledge
• the development of knowledge societies in Southeast Asia
• science parks in Singapore, India and China
• knowledge management in development projects and in multinational corporations
• knowledge hubs and epistemic landscapes
The transfer of scientific knowledge and the development of decision support systems has become a focus in the final stages of the larger interdisciplinary projects at ZEF. Based on the KM experience of ZEF researchers and doctoral students, the research results will be channelled to the stakeholders in the respective research areas. The Singapore Management University (SMU) has run yearly since 2001 executive education courses on knowledge management, sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Commonwealth Fund for
Technical Cooperation (CFTC). In these courses higher government official from Commonwealth countries were introduced to theories and methods of knowledge governance and knowledge management, e-governance and the use of ICT for development. The ZEF based Bonn
International Graduate School for Development Research (BIGS –DR) has regularly offered courses on knowledge management and knowledge governance.
The community of practice and research on knowledge for development has been guided by
Professor Solvay Gerke, Director, ZEF, University of Bonn
Professor Pang Eng Fong, Dean, Lee Kong Chian School of Business, SMU
Associate Professor Thomas Menkhoff, Lee Kong Chian School of Business, SMU
Professor Hans-Dieter Evers, ZEF, University of Bonn
