Prof. Dr. Hans-Dieter Evers

is Senior Fellow (and former Director), Centre for Development Research, University of Bonn, where he also teaches Southeast Asian Studies. In 2003, 2004, 2005 he was Visiting Professor of Management, School of Business, Singapore Management University. He received his D.Phil. degree from the University of Freiburg in 1962 and subsequently taught sociology at Monash University, Northern Illinois University and at Yale University, where he was Director of Graduate Southeast Asia Studies.
From 1971 to 74 he was Professor and Head of the Department of Sociology, University of Singapore, and from 1974 to 2001 Professor and Chairman, Sociology of Development Research Centre, University of Bielefeld. He held visiting appointments at EHSS-Paris, the University of Bern, USM Penang, University of Indonesia, Gadjah Mada University, University of Hawaii, Trinity College Oxford and the National University of Malaysia. In 2000 he was Distinguished Visiting Professor of Sociology at the National University of Singapore. He also served as consultant to UNESCO, ILO, the World Bank, KfW (German Development Bank), GTZ, and other national and international development agencies.

He is the author of numerous articles and books , including "Monks, Priests and Peasants: Buddhism and Social Structure in Central Ceylon" (Leiden 1972, to be republished in Kandy), "Modernization in Southeast Asia" (Oxford 1973, 1975), "Households and the World Economy" (with Smith and Wallerstein 1984 ), together with Tilman Schiel "Strategic Groups: Comparative Studies on the State, Bureaucracy and Class Formation" (German edition Berlin 1988, Indonesian edition 1990, 1992) and edited with Heiko Schrader "The Moral Economy of Trade: Ethnicity and the Development of Markets" (London: Routledge 1994). Another book on “Southeast Asian Urbanism” was published in 2000 (2nd ed 2004) by LIT Verlag Münster and co-published by St.Martin's Press New York and ISEAS Singapore. He is currently engaged in research on social and cultural dimensions of global knowledge society, knowledge management in development cooperation, knowledge governance
and cultural diversity.
